Habits

Diurnal, Very distinctive persistent almost hysterical high-pitched yapping note. Nests vary from mere scrapes in mud to quite substantial structures of weeds.

Habitat

Coastal Wetlands, Inland waters and fringing forests; floodplains; Shallow lakes; swamps and tidal flats; both fresh and brackish.

Breeding

August to December, 4; greenish-stone, blotchy purplish-brown, under lav. Strongly gregarious in breeding, two broods may be raised if conditions are favourable. Nesting colonies are situated at the margins of lagoons or on low islands and seldom exceed 50 - 60 pairs. Sexes share incubation and care of the young. Incubation takes about 22-25 days and the young fledge about 30 days after hatching.
