Description

Male: blue black above, with rich chestnut sides of head and neck. Female: duller, crown and back rich-brown, paler below, streaked brown.

Habits

Nocturnal, Mainly feeds at night, alone , defending its feeding territory.

Habitat

Wetlands, Streams and swamps; Freshwater reed beds.

Breeding

October to December. 4 to 5 eggs; white. Nest of dead vegetation in reeds. Incubation 16-19 days, by both sexes, young fledge in about 4 wks.
