Description
A comical little duck with barred flanks and huge square-tipped grey bill. White forehead and face with dark-brown patch over eye and tiny pink 'ear spot'.
Habits
Diurnal, highly mobile. Up ends and shovels beak through mud when feeding. Small to very large flocks.
Habitat
Wetlands Grassland, Shallow lakes and swamps and flood waters; Inland fresh and saline waters.
Notes
Rare vagrant
Breeding
Breeding in response to floods. 6 to 8; cream, nest of down in tree or grass in water. Incubation for 28 days by female, both sexes care for brood.
