Family
Myobatrachidae
Description
A medium sized, squat toadlet, brownish in colour, often with orange patches on the paratoid glands & either side of the tail. The skin is warty & colour patterns vary between individuals.
Habits
Very little is known of the life cycle of these frogs. They appear to occupy a range of habitats including grassland, river corridores, high sandstone ridges & eucalypt woodland. Roadside quarries are a favorite breeding site. When undisturbed, they walk on their toes rather than hopping.
Habitat
Annual & perennial streams, flooded grassland & adjacent areas of sandstone. Burrows in sandy areas by day, congregating in loose breeding colonies during the wet season. The habitat is dry & arid for most of the year.
Notes
The call is a single loud, deep squelch, emitted at regular intervals by night or day. It can frequently be found calling together with U. lithomoda where there are gravelly soils & tussock grass. They remain active at night well into the dry season.
Breeding
Males congregate near streams & flooded grassland during rainy weather where they call in unison, producing the 'mexican wave' effect, common to other Uperoleia species. Calling males may also be found in rugged sandstone gorges calling from sheltered positions on bare rock. Breeding biology remains unknown at this stage.
Parks
Keep River NP, Miramar NP, Parry's Lagoon, Lake Argyle region.
Diet
Small, soft-bodied invertebrates such as termites are readily taken in captivity.
