FrogWatch welcomes the Federal Government announcement of Community Action Grant funding ( $ 20,000.00 ) to focus on protecting the reptiles and other biodiversity in the Coastal fringe areas of Darwin . The impact of Cane Toads and other environmental changes has had a devastating impact on reptiles in most areas of the Top End but in Darwin we have seen some species still surviving . It appears this is due to the community spirit of the Darwin people and the way they have responded to the FrogWatch managed â?? call to arms â?? to minimize the damage toads cause to our biodiversity . FrogWatch Coordinator and Darwin Lord Mayor Graeme Sawyer said â?? Observations show that we still have species present in these areas that have vanished from other locations in the top end . We believe this to be due to the success of the Community Cane Toad Control Initiative we have implemented with the help of the territory government . We hope to be able to get a more accurate picture of whether the populations of reptiles are still declining or whether we can save them . The community will be invited to assist in finding these remaining reptiles so we can microchip them and work out whether the population is growing or not . The proposal is to protect the biodiversity , particularly the reptiles , of the coastal fringe of Darwin from Vesteys Beach through to Lee Point by implementing a cane toad management strategy , combined with other habitat management , to minimise the impact of cane toads in the area , and especially to minimise cane toad breeding . We also propose to begin a monitoring process that will allow us to document the success of the management activity , especially in relation to the endangered species like Varanus panoptes , the yellow - spotted monitor .
