Biggest Goanna in Darwin
Published: 1 May 2021
Checking traps last night at Cas coastal and things have been pretty quiet this year so not expecting much, so this monster Panoptes was a surprise. Weighing 5.9 kilograms it is about double the mass of the next biggest we have seen in 5 years. We have data from 102 animals and only 2 others are over 2kg. Snout Vent of 634 mm is well ahead of the next largest at 580. Had some tail damage and a fair piece missing so would be over 6 kg. With a full tail it wold have been around 1.4 or 1.5 meters. I didn’t think there were animals like this left Darwin as we mostly catch small ones. It was such an awesome experience.
